It is likely that most people who purchase a home dehumidifier do so and start using it without every getting to grips with how one should ensure the longevity of the machine by discovering how best to maintain it. If you have the user manual go back and give it a read you will likely find that there are several easy things that you can do to that will both increaser it’s current performance and efficiency and also ensure that it lasts for a long time too. First before we go any further it is worth considering a few safety considerations and common sense guidelines to thinkabout when using your dehumidifier:

•       Try and get a qualified electrician to take a long at the wiring just to double check that it si both set-up correctly and that it's safe. Make sure that you do not have any flammable liquids nearby to your dehumidifier, this is only asking for trouble.

•       Do not be tempted into continuing to use dehumidifiers that are partially damaged, for example, a worn electricity cable or such like which could easily lead to more complicated situations such as house fires or even electric shocks/electrocution. Furthermore ensure that any parts that are replaced on a dehumidifier are of the exact type required for that make and model of air dehumidifier.

•       One of the major risks when using a dehumidifier is that of fire hazard. This usually occurs when the air intake is blocked which can cause overheating. This is an important consideration when thinking about where to locate your dehumidifier and how close it will be positioned to other objects/furniture in your house.

 3) The exterior of the machine can easily be cleaned with normal soapy water and cloth/sponge but obviously take care not to get water on electrical parts such as humidistat’s and so on. It is particularly important to make sure that the coils are not touched by water in anyway as this may lead to permanent damage!

 4) Thoroughly check all cables and cords to ensure that they haven’t developed any places where the wires have worn through. This is especially common in places where the cords/wires bend around corners or rub against any other objects.

 6) Compressor failure and overheating are often caused by a build up of dust inside of the dehumidifier. Therefore do anything you can to both clean away dust and also ensure that dust cannot easily get inside of the machine (although this is usually a design consideration).

 7) Check to see if the pump system is working effectively and that all the moving parts are doing so freely and easily. Refer to your manufacturer or place of purchase to check the guarantee period of the dehumidifier if you run into any major problems.
